Set Up a Battery Corner in Your Garage
A shelf, a maintainer, gloves and a multimeter make winter battery checks a two-minute job.

Batteries are heavy, messy and a little dangerous, so they deserve their own spot. Ours is a two-foot section of wall.
What goes in it
- A sturdy wooden shelf at waist height (not the concrete floor)
- A smart maintainer mounted on the wall with its cords coiled on a hook
- Multimeter, terminal brush and a small tub of baking soda
- Goggles and nitrile or rubber gloves hanging at eye level
- A paper log taped up: battery, date, voltage
Layout tips
Keep it near an outlet but away from the water heater or anything with a flame. Leave a little ventilation space; charging batteries can give off hydrogen.
A battery corner is also where people try reconditioning projects. If that interests you, our review of the Easy Battery Fix guide explains what's realistic.

Writing down voltage once a month shows you which battery is slowly fading long before it strands you.
